Ensuring a stress-free and comfortable dental experience for your child is our priority. IV sedation can be an excellent option for children who are anxious about dental visits or require extensive dental work. Our experienced pediatric dentists will discuss your child’s oral health needs with you to determine if IV sedation will be beneficial for them. We will also provide you with detailed information about IV sedation and how you can help your child prepare to receive this option.

Before Your Child’s Appointment

Please take these steps prior to bringing your child to an appointment where they are receiving IV sedation:

  • Health Status: Keep our team updated on any changes in your child’s health, including any existing medical conditions. If your child is unwell, we may need to reschedule to ensure their safety.
  • Medications and Allergies: Provide detailed information about any medications your child is taking, any known allergies and any recent changes in their medical history.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Dress your child in loose, comfortable clothing to help them feel at ease during their visit.
  • Restroom Use: Ensure your child uses the restroom before their appointment to avoid interruptions during the procedure.
  • Dietary Restrictions: Do not give your child milk or solid food after midnight before the appointment. Only clear liquids should be given in the six hours leading up to the appointment. Avoid greasy, fatty or fried foods prior to the visit.
  • Asthma ManagementIf your child uses an asthma inhaler, bring it with you to the appointment.

Remember, as your child’s legal guardian you will need to remain in the office for the duration of their procedure.

After Your Child’s Appointment

When you bring your child home, keep these things in mind:

  • Drowsiness and Monitoring: Your child will be very drowsy after the procedure. Close monitoring is crucial to ensure their safety.
  • Sleeping Position: Make sure your child sleeps on their side with their chin up to keep their airway clear.
  • Hydration: Wake your child every hour to offer small sips of clear liquids to prevent dehydration.
  • First Meal: Choose a light, easy-to-digest meal for your child’s first meal after the treatment to avoid stomach upset.
  • Managing Nausea: If your child vomits, help them bend over and turn their head to the side to prevent choking.

IV sedation can make dental visits much more manageable for your child, providing a calm environment for necessary treatments.
